The farthest planet from Earth in our solar system is Neptune. Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun and is located about 2.8 billion miles away from Earth on average. It is a gas giant planet that is primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and other gases.
Neptune has a very thin, faint ring system and 14 known moons. It is the most distant of the four gas giants in our solar system, with a diameter about four times that of Earth. Neptune's atmosphere is primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and methane, giving it a blue color.
Neptune was discovered in 1846 by German astronomer Johann Galle, based on predictions made by French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier. Since its discovery, there have been only one spacecraft that has visited Neptune: NASA's Voyager 2 probe, which flew by the planet in 1989.
